WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. House of Representatives today approved a massive new public lands bill that aims to permanently protect nearly three million acres across Colorado, California, Washington and Arizona.
The legislation – sponsored by U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) – is a collection of eight separate public lands bills the House approved last year – including DeGette's Colorado Wilderness Act to protect over 660,000 acres of wilderness in 36 unique areas across Colorado.
The House passed legislation Friday that would create about 1.5 million acres of new wilderness and incorporate nearly 1,200 miles of waterways into the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System as Democrats move to protect more public lands — with President Joe Biden's blessing.
The bill passed by a vote of 227-200. The bill passed mostly along party lines, with eight Republicans joining all but one Democratic lawmaker in voting for the bill.
A bill is up for debate at the U.S. Capitol to permanently protect nearly 3 million acres of land across Colorado, California, Washington and Arizona. More than 1 million of that land is in Colorado.
The bill is called "Protecting America's Wilderness and Public Lands Act" which is actually a package of eight individual public land bills. Colorado Congresswoman Diana DeGette is sponsoring the bill.
A final vote is expected in the House on Friday.
Colorado Congresswoman Diana DeGette chaired a meeting on Tuesday about COVID vaccine distribution. The Democrat representing the 1st Congressional District in the state met with representatives from five pharmaceuticals making the current vaccines.
