DeGette statement on House vote to create Jan. 6 commission
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following is a comment from U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) on the House voting today to establish an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol:
"January 6 was one of the darkest days in our nation's history and the American people deserve to know exactly what happened.
"As one of the nine House impeachment managers that sought a conviction against Donald Trump for his actions that day, our goal in presenting our case to the American people was not to punish him, but to shed a light on what happened in hopes of preventing such violence from ever happening again in this country.
"Our goal in establishing a nonpartisan commission is the same. We want to know what happened, why it happened, and what needs to be done to ensure it never happens again.
"Protecting our nation from the threats we face should never be a partisan issue. It's a duty that all of us, as members of Congress, share. And the American people should be outraged at anyone who voted today to cover up the truth."
