WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette (CO-01) released the following statement commemorating the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001:

"While thirteen years have gone by, the United States still mourns the terrible attacks of September 11, 2001. Whether we knew those who died in the attacks as family, friends, or simply as fellow citizens and human beings, we continue to feel their loss. This anniversary reminds me, and I hope all of us, to look out for one another and work together to make our world a better place."

U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., has written letters to two congressional committee chairmen seeking a public hearing into reports of domestic violence by professional athletes.

"The penalties imposed by professional sports leagues on players who commit such violence vary widely," wrote Rep. DeGette in a letter to Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R- Mich.) and Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Chairman Tim Murphy (R-Penn).

A U.S. congresswoman called today for a hearing into how professional sports leagues handle domestic violence as the National Football League continued to deal with fallout from the Ray Rice case.

U.S. Representative Diana DeGette of Colorado, the ranking Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, sent a letter to Republican committee leaders seeking the public hearing.

WASHINGTON — Using the Ray Rice case as an example, U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette of Colorado urged House leaders on Wednesday to hold a hearing on "the problem of domestic violence by professional athletes," according to a letter released by her office.

Her request comes as a media storm rages around the release of a video that shows Rice, formerly of the Baltimore Ravens, attacking his then-fiancee at an Atlantic City hotel.

This issue has received renewed attention after disturbing new video surfaced of professional football player Ray Rice striking his then-fiancé.

Waxman and Health Subcommittee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. sent a letter to Chairmen Fred Upton, Joe Pitts, and Tim Murphy requesting a hearing on the rapidly growing Ebola outbreak in West Africa. The letter was sent in the wake of an urgent warning by CDC Director Thomas Frieden that "I could not possibly overstate the need for an emergency response" and that the virus is "spiraling out of control."

Personalized medicine — the use of individuals' genomes to treat diseases in ways particular to them — is on the rise nationally, but federal regulations and funding issues are getting in the way of developing more advanced drugs and getting them to market.

As such, U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Denver) is working on what she calls a "21st Century Cures Initiative," a bipartisan effort with Republican U.S. Rep. Fred Upton of Michigan to make the delivery of health care more efficient by focusing on emerging fields like digital health, and streamlining clinical trials for drugs.
