At the urging of Colorado U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, a House committee on Tuesday stressed the need for vaccinations.


DeGette had asked the Committee on Energy and Commerce to hold a meeting on the issue after a measles outbreak centered in California sickened more than 100.


"For the 42 patients for whom vaccination status is known, 34 were unvaccinated and three received partial vaccinations," DeGette co-wrote in a letter to the committee. "Public health officials have emphasized that vaccination is the most important strategy to prevent measles."

Republicans on a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee on Tuesday used a hearing on the flu season to debunk claims that vaccines are not safe for children as fear continues to grow over the country's measles outbreak.


Rep. Tim Murphy (R-Pa.) asked four of the country's top infectious disease experts if they believed that parents should have their children vaccinated.


"Definitely," Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. "To me it's really a slam dunk what the decision should be."

A collection of community members, pastors, civil rights activists and political figures gathered at Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church to discuss ongoing discrimination around the state, tied into larger race issues being played out on a national stage.

Colorado Rep. Diana DeGette spelled out the importance social media can play when researching diseases and treatments in a July 2014 congressional health subcommittee meeting.
DeGette told a story about a family with a child who had the rare NGYL1 disease. The father was a computer professor at the University of Utah and searched the Internet for others who suffer from the ailment. The father was able to identify patients around the world which, led to a research group being formed and a paper scheduled for publication.

U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., has written letters to two congressional committee chairmen seeking a public hearing into reports of domestic violence by professional athletes.

"The penalties imposed by professional sports leagues on players who commit such violence vary widely," wrote Rep. DeGette in a letter to Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R- Mich.) and Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Chairman Tim Murphy (R-Penn).

U.S. Representative Diana DeGette of Colorado, the ranking Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, sent a letter to Republican committee leaders seeking the public hearing.

WASHINGTON — Using the Ray Rice case as an example, U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette of Colorado urged House leaders on Wednesday to hold a hearing on "the problem of domestic violence by professional athletes," according to a letter released by her office.

Her request comes as a media storm rages around the release of a video that shows Rice, formerly of the Baltimore Ravens, attacking his then-fiancee at an Atlantic City hotel.
