The U.S. has gotten a crash course over the past 18 months in just how important the biomedical research pipeline can be, as scientists turned years of basic science research into highly effective vaccines against the coronavirus in record-time.

Now, lawmakers say the U.S. is due for big investments to its biomedical infrastructure.

Reps. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) and Fred Upton (R-Mich.) are pushing a bill that would build on the 21st Century Cures Act, a major overhaul in biomedical research passed in 2016 designed to speed up the pipeline for medical innovation.

A hotel in northeast Denver is a step closer to becoming housing for people struggling with homelessness. A key House Appropriations subcommittee approved a huge bill on Monday that includes the funding.

Rep. Diane DeGette, a Democrat who represents Colorado's 1st Congressional District, requested $2 million in federal funding for the City of Denver to purchase and renovate the now-vacant Stay Inn Hotel and convert it into housing for the homeless. The hotel is located at 12033 East 38th Avenue, near Peoria Street and Smith Road.

A congressional subcommittee on Monday approved nearly $6.5 million for a trio of projects intended to create affordable housing in Denver and a shelter for children who are homeless.

U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, who requested the funding from the U.S. House of Representatives' Subcommittee on Transportation, and Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies, said the federal contribution will provide relief for families in need.

A bipartisan, bicameral group is reintroducing tweaked legislation Thursday that would overhaul how the FDA oversees laboratory-developed tests and diagnostics, POLITICO's David Lim reports.

The VALID Act would regulate both lab tests and diagnostics under a new framework clarifying the responsibilities of the FDA and CMS. Reps. Larry Bucshon (R-Ind.) and Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) are backing the bill in the House, with Sens. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) and Richard Burr (R-N.C.) sponsoring the Senate version.
