DeGette Statement on Trump’s Unconstitutional Federal Funding Freeze

DENVER — Today, Congresswoman Diana DeGette (CO-01) released the following statement after the Trump administration froze virtually all federal funding. 

“Donald Trump’s reckless and unconstitutional action to freeze essentially all federal spending is going to hurt ALL Americans in both red and blue states. The American people did not vote for this. We do not have a king in our country, no matter how highly Donald Trump regards himself.  

“His administration is holding up Congressionally-approved bipartisan funding, and it’s going to make life harder for American families across our country and abroad. Just this morning, my office has received calls from a father who is concerned about if his daughter will be able to go to her HeadStart program tomorrow, a researcher at CU Anschutz who is worried about whether her work on life-saving treatments and cures will be able to continue, and a leader of an organization who won’t be able to pay his staff working to rebuild emerging democracies around the world. 

“Nothing about these latest actions will help to lower the cost-of-living for my constituents or anyone in the United States, and it will even worsen the affordability crisis we are experiencing. These actions set a dangerous precedent that erodes our system of checks and balances. The administration must reverse course immediately.”
