DeGette Statement on Trump Administration Chaos and Confusion

Today, Congresswoman Diana DeGette (CO-01) released the following statement as the Trump administration continues to confuse the American people and obfuscate their true intentions.

“Do not mistake our change in strategy for acquiescence. Donald Trump clearly said that he wanted to be a dictator on day 1, and his actions since he took office barely one week ago have shown that he was serious. His administration is pushing the boundaries on the legality of presidential power.

“It is incumbent on every American to stand up for our constitutional democracy. We need to take our efforts to the halls of Congress, the courts, and to every lever of power to ensure that all Americans’ rights are protected and that our collective voices are heard. For two weeks in a row, Trump has assaulted the Constitution, first through an attack on birthright citizenship and then with this horrific federal freeze. Democrats worked closely with the state attorneys general to stop the federal freeze, and the speed at which we respond is essential to break through the noise and chaos that Trump seeks to create.

“Trump’s actions are doing nothing but sowing division at a time when we need to be focused on lifting wages, lowering food and energy costs, and improving our health care system.

“Our work cannot stop here. We must remain united because his strategy to flood the zone is designed to have us turn against each other. We all have a role to play, and I won’t stop fighting to protect our Constitution from the unrepentant assault by this president.”
