DeGette statement on the partisan impeachment of DHS Sec. Mayorkas

February 13, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) released the following statement after the U.S. House voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas:

“Today, House Republicans have made a mockery of the impeachment process,” said Rep. DeGette. “Instead of working to advance the real solutions we could implement to improve our immigration system, they’ve chosen to give themselves another campaign talking point – under the clear direction of Donald Trump.

“There is no legal or constitutional basis for this impeachment. Even conservative legal scholars have said this stunt is baseless. It’s a sham that politicizes Congress’s legitimate oversight duties.

“Sec. Mayorkas has spent the last three years working to address some of the most difficult political questions facing our nation. While we’ve not always agreed, Sec. Mayorkas has served our nation honorably, and I’m thankful for his public service and his leadership.”

Tonight’s vote comes after a bipartisan coalition voted down the measure to impeach Sec. Mayorkas last week.
