DeGette Statement on Emergency Contraception Decision
WASHINGTON– U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette (CO-1) today issued the following statement inresponse to the Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) decision thatthe Food and Drug Administration (FDA) must deny Plan B One-Step emergencycontraception from being made accessible to all women.
"Iam disappointed in HHS' decision today denying women full access to theemergency contraception, Plan B One-Step. I have always been committed toensuring all our health policy decisions are grounded in sound science. FDA'sreview process was clearly extensive and thorough, and the data shared with HHSmade clear that Plan B is safe and effective for its intended use. Accessto reliable and safe contraception is a fundamental component of health careand bringing Plan B from behind the pharmacy counter onto the shelves withother contraceptive methods would have been a victory for women's health."
