DeGette On Financial Market Crisis

September 15, 2008

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, Vice Chair ofthe Committee on Energy and Commerce, today offered the followingcomments on the troubling news in the financial markets:

"The recent turmoil in the financial markets further illustrates thefailure of the Republican's economic policies. Americans across thenation – and throughout Colorado – are feeling the strain of risinghealth care costs, record energy and gas prices, and the fallout fromthe mortgage crisis.

"The Republican Party's policies are out-of-touch with mainstreamAmerica and the challenges that lie ahead. President Bushmischaracterized today's events as simply an ‘adjustment,' whileSenator McCain turns his head the other way saying the ‘fundamentals ofour economy our strong.'

"The Democratic Congress has taken steps to strengthen our economy bypassing a bipartisan economic stimulus package and efforts to shore upthe nation's housing finance system. I look forward to working with mycolleagues on another economic recovery package that will help oureconomy -- which continues to suffer as a result of the last eightyears of Republican fiscal mismanagement.
