Pro-Choice Caucus leaders’ statement on Texas anti-abortion bill
Today, Pro-Choice Caucus co-chairs Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) released the following statement in response to the enactment of S.B. 8, the Texas law banning all abortions as early as six weeks:
“Make no mistake: S.B. 8 is the most dire assault on reproductive rights that this country has ever seen. Since the 1990s, the Pro-Choice Caucus has been the leading Congressional voice in favor of protecting and expanding access to abortion. In light of state-level efforts to restrict abortion access and the Supreme Court’s failure to protect reproductive rights, Congressional action to enshrine abortion access protections into federal law is more urgent now than ever.
“Abortion may be legal in this country, but in too many places and for too many people it is far from accessible. The Texas law is only one of many efforts to impose further restrictions – restrictions that will fall most heavily on those patients who already face barriers to care. Nearly 600 abortion restrictions have been introduced in 2021 alone, and 90 have been enacted by state legislatures across the country.
“As states like Texas impose ever-more aggressive anti-abortion legislation, and the Supreme Court takes aim at the underlying protections in Roe v. Wade, the PCC will stand strong in our fight to protect reproductive rights for all Americans. We will continue to work with our colleagues in the Senate to ensure harmful anti-abortion riders like the Hyde amendment are left out of government spending bills. We will also work tirelessly to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act, introduced by Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA), that ensure states like Texas cannot ban critical reproductive health services and abortion care.
“We believe, fundamentally, that abortion is health care, and that every person has the right to decide – for themselves – whether or not to seek an abortion.”
