WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) today sponsored a resolution to impeach President Donald J. Trump for inciting a mob to attack the U.S. Capitol Building Wednesday in an attempt to prevent Congress from certifying the results of the recent presidential election for his opponent.

“President Trump is a real danger to this country.” DeGette said. “Whether it be through the invocation of the 25th amendment or by Congress’s power to impeach, President Trump needs to be removed from office immediately.”

The resolution, sponsored by DeGette and several other members of the U.S. House of Representative, charges Trump with inciting an insurrection and calls for his impeachment, removal from office and disqualification from holding any other elected office in the future.

“Donald John Trump engaged in high Crimes and Misdemeanors by willfully inciting violence against the Government of the United States,” the resolution reads. “He threatened the integrity of the democratic system, interfered with the peaceful transition of power, and imperiled a coordinate branch of government.

“President Trump, by such conduct, has demonstrated that he will remain a threat to national security, democracy, and the Constitution if allowed to remain in office, and has acted in a manner grossly incompatible with self-governance and the rule of law. President Trump thus warrants impeachment and trial, removal from office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honor, trust, or profit under the United States.”

Lawmakers plan to formally introduce the resolution in the U.S. House Monday.
