DeGette: Bannon’s Removal from NSC Puts More Grown-Ups In Charge
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Diana DeGette (D-CO), Chief Deputy Whip, today hailed the removal of Steve Bannon from the National Security Council.
“This is a step toward putting more grown-ups in charge at the Trump White House,” DeGette said. “The National Security Council serves a critical convening role for professionals leading our country’s international affairs and should not be politicized. Many Americans are deeply alarmed over the direction our foreign policy is taking under this presidency. Let’s hope today’s reorganization of the NSC helps ease some of our concerns, but there’s much more to be done.”
DeGette is a co-sponsor of H.R. 804, which would prohibit the President from designating anyone whose primary responsibility is political in nature to serve as a member of the NSC or to regularly take part in NSC meetings.
In November, DeGette issued a statement expressing concern over Trump’s appointment of Bannon to the role of chief White House strategist, and urged the president-elect to build an administration that promoted unity and repudiates hate. She also joined 168 other House Democrats in calling for Bannon’s removal, saying his work at Breitbart, an online news and opinion source that publishes bigoted content, makes him the wrong choice to help steer an administration that intends to unite a divided nation.
